help bread mix bb end sep throw it out?

my oh was at the local shop couple of weeks ago and they had flour for making bread down to 10p, (have to add my own yeast)he brought me 8!!!! i still have a few left is it okay to use?, remember my mum mentioning "weevils" or something but alas she's no longer here to ask. Make my bread by hand - new to this but fed up paying a fortune for nice bread.

hope someone can help.

thanks

  • best before is just a guide for when the food is 'best before' this is about quality of the product, where they cannot guarantee the quality past a certain date. you should be more wary when it is an expiry date, or consume before, as this is related to the safety of consuming the product.

    I would happily eat it.

No way ... I'd use it even if it were BBE Sep 2007

As for weevils, you would rarely see those these days. To make sure you don't, wrap each one up tightly in a plastic/sealed bag and shove it in the freezer for 24 hours. That'd sort the 1:1,000,000 chance that your bag has them.
  • p.s. also use common sense, if it smells 'off' or is growing green mould, then it's obviously not safe for consumption...

  • I would use it too. I have had weevils in flour before and they are easy to see because they move about, well they did in mine anyway.

A year or so ago I was reading a similar discussion about flour and weevils on another forum. After a fairly lengthy discussion about how to avoid them/get rid of them etc, another lady came on and said "you lot are soft, when I lived in the middle east we just seived them out and used the flour anyway." She seemed to have survivied the experience ok, mind you I still don't fancy weevil infested flour myself.

I would definitely use your flour though.
