George Foreman Grilll VS Grill

Which do you think would be more economical on electricity?
My cooker grill is pretty slow but is easier to control than the GF one.

  • I don't know for sure but I would think that the George Foreman is almost certainly more economical because it heats up almost instantly and cooks both sides at once. I cook loads of things on my GF except for chops and steak which I don't think it cooks nicely at all.

  • I agree with recovering spendaholic the GF is definitely cheaper to run than a grill and as a bonus it cooks faster than a normal grill and it gets rid of a lot of fat from the meat

Hi Jinny, I have a George too. I was given it as a presant and do use it.
The only thing we find not so good is the washing of it after use. A bit fiddly with it being electric and you cannot put it in the sink like you would a grill tray.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?

I just got a george as well (given to me by friends who bought one but never cook lol) I've only used it a couple of times so far and yep it heats up real quickly but like Julie I've found it's not so great on the cleaning front. Was actually wondering if the lakeland "magic non stick liner" http://www.lakeland.co.uk/magic-non-stick-liner/F/C/kitchenideas/C/kitchenideas-cooking-baking/C/cooking-baking-baking/C/baking-baking-parchment-cases/product/5570_5571 would be safe to use in it? I've looked on the site and it seems that the toaster bags they sell are made with the same material... So I'm thinking that if it's safe to use in the toaster/oven it might be ok in the grill... Would all be so much easier if the grill plates were removable

Edit: I have just called Lakeland who said it is not designed to be in direct contact with the heating element so can't use it :(. However the nice lady on the phone said that she would put it on their suggestion list so with some luck we might see at some point a lining designed for these (here's to hoping )

Our George Foreman grill had to go in the bin because we completely wore it out through using it so much - the non-stick coating had all but worn off. Now my husband is desperate to replace it with one of the ones with removeable plates so it would be easy to clean, but I had a look at one and thought the plates were very fiddly and also seemed very flimsy and I wondered if the locking mechanism would break. Does anyone have one of these newer models and if so, do you think it's a good buy?
  • My friend has one with removable plates and she says that after a few times in the dishwasher the non-stick wasn't as good. For this reason I got a George Entertaining grill when they were half price in Argos a couple of months ago. It's great - sturdy and takes alot of stuff and I find it really easy to clean. When I have finished cooking I spread out a wet(really wet - not wrung out) dishcloth over it and close it up and then switch it off. By the time it is cool all the gunk is on the dishcloth and I literally have to just wipe it down and put the drip tray into the dishwasher. If I forget to clean it (or if the kids have used it!) and it gets cold then I just do the same thing but put the wet dishcloth on the cold grill and heat it up for about 1 -2 minutes. The Entertaining grill is still on offer at some places - Should be £90 -odd quid but you can get it on Amazon much less and if you google it you can find it for about £40.

I have the one with removeable plates and it's great. Had it over a year and it's as good as new and is both washed in the sink and dishwasher. I've just bought my parents one for Christmas. Posted a good deal on the grabbit thread last week as it's only £37 delivered from electrical 123 and you can get cashback as well. Had one that you couldn't wash before and although I used to do the dishcloth trick as well it was still pretty messy. Went in the bin!

Thanks, sounds like I was being silly then! I wouldn't be putting them in the dishwasher anyway as we don't have one. I'll look out for one on sale, they seem to be quite expensive.
