P and O Ferries and Phillipino's

Just been on a mini cruise using P and O. I was suprised by the ammount of Phillipino staff aboard the ship. How come P and O and other shipping companies use staff from the Phillipines. Years ago i tried nearly every year to get a job on the cruise ships and no wonder I could not get a look in as all the staff who work on the Hull P and O ferries anre all foreign.

I was quire disapointed as like i say i have qualifications that I would have like to use years ago in the cruise ship world but could never get a start.

If its a wage thing how can they pay someone a cheaper wage if they are working in and out of Britain, Hull to Holland for example.

I'm not saying i have a problem with foreign workers but I went to college for anumbe rof years to get my trade.

For the same reason that huge numbers of Phillipino people are employed in the UAE and Saudi. Their country is very poor so they can be exploited easily. They are willing to work for very low wages and under poor conditions.

Tons of people out of work yet I still see foreigners occupying jobs that could be taken by british workers.absolute disgrace.

I had an interview at a hotel and realised most of the staff there were from eastern europe whilst there was a room of about 50 brits all trying to get a few positions up for grabs????

Yeah, but most British workers are too lazy to get out of bed to work for NMW rates, most believe they are better off on benefits than working, that's why its mostly foreigners as they come from a much poorer country so our NMW prob seems a fortune to them. It's our silly (not word I'm looking for but it will do) benefits system that's gives no incentive to some folk to work.

Only because jobs are now so scarce, folk willing/able to work will try anything. Don't think at all it's the foreigners taking British jobs, if anything they are willing to work and put in the hours. Think of all the corner shops open till late, take away shops etc most run by foreigners, why coz brits are too lazy.

so if you are working for a British company such as Uk based P and O for example they can take on Phillipinos on a lower wage?? isnt this illegal or will they just be paid the NMW for what ever job they are paid to do, for example, lets say a qualified chef aboard the cruise ships, if you are british you would proberly be expected to be paid around £10 to maybe £15 per hour, but if you are Phillipino then the same job could be as little as NMW, is that correct.

If this is the case and say i was working beside a Phillipino and i was doing the same job but getting maybe £7 and hour more then I find this very unfair and not right. Surely they have rights too??

What rights, if they are illegal immigrants. They come over here, sneak in to the country expecting an easy ride, compared to their own country probably is. Re qualified chefs=phillipino chefs, I really dont know what they would be paid, should be above NMW anyway but why do you think in a lot of companies that employees are not allowed to discuss wages/bonuses etc. Because everyone is getting paid either inflated salaries or as little as the can get away with paying.
Sorry, in an ideal world there would be plenty jobs for everyone regardless of nationality, but in reality it is whoever will do the jobs for least amount of pay.
Maybe when you applied years ago, they already had enough workers, who knows.
Working ethics of Britain has changed a great deal over the years. So good on the foreigners who are willing to work if some Brits aren't. Although I see what your original point was OP, sorry for going onto another 'thread' about it.

I'm wondering if the country where the ship is registered is the country from which employment law applies.

Although PandO may be a UK company, their ships are probably registered under flags of convenience.

:rotfl::rotfl: Actually, the working conditions are pretty good and the wages may not be brilliant but they keep all their tips - and they are bloody good. Plus of course they get to travel the world, eat lovely food, enjoy year round sunshine, pretty much pick and choose what cruise they work on...

In a good quality city restaurant, perhaps - in the vast majority of places, dream on!
