Nationwide do offer a basic bank account:

    Basic bank account
Nationwide also offer a basic bank account, which is suitable for those who want access to a simple account offering a range of features and benefits:

pay money in and set up regular payments like standing orders and Direct Debits – both in and out
a cash card which enables you to withdraw money and check your balance at any of our branches, cash machines and any Post Office branch
manage your money over the internet
the basic bank account does not offer an overdraft, a cheque book or a debit or credit card

Natwest offer a step account for people with financial difficulties but it will have no overdraft no cheque book and possibly a solo or cash card.

You need a new bank account that has no associations with your creditors as it is possible that a creditor can recover any monies from the bank account somehow (Barclaycard and Barclays bank for example). PM me your email address and I will send you a spreadsheet that details what associations are in place with banks and creditors. I will also send you a link to a thread that if read inconjunction with the spreadsheet makes sense.

    Hi Biglad
The smile account is the basic one they offer, I think!mind you they did put a £500 odraft on it which I didnt want(it was just automatic), I told them I had another current account and just wasnt to swap, I did it all online and theyve been great so far, had a welcome call this morning!

Nationwide gave me a basic account and I have massive debt. I have no overdraft or cheque book and only a basic cash card. But its fine. I didn't mention Payplan to them, just said I wanted a basic account.
