a default on an account????

My partner today has just checked his credit report on experian and has discovered that he has a default for £100 from HSBC from 2007 he never recalls ever being in debt with that bank as he closed that account due to not being happy with the service which was no problem at all.
He never had an overdraft with them or any such borrowing facilities and it does seem a bit odd that its exactly £100, he has never had any letters demanding money etc etc.
Is there anyway of finding out if he did owe them money as he no longer has his bank details being that this was a while ago now. It is extremely unlikely he owed this ever at all, and hes almost 100% certain he doesnt so what route can he go down to retract the default if he never owed this money to them?
Many thanks
