How to deal with travel sickness?

  • Fresh ginger from the health shop, pretty cheap and tastes sweet, I used it when flying and it was lovely, not sure if a good remedy for kids though as I don't have kids.

Thank you both for your suggestions, I will try them both together!

Someone I was talking to recommended giving her a coin to hold, and that the distraction would help. Not sure about that though. Willing to try anything!
Well, the nursery used to reckon that sitting sick children on newspaper helped (and it may mean cleaning up the mess is easier too ...)

On that note, all mine used to be horrors, and they each had their own piece of sheet to put over their laps. And a carrier bag handy, just in case. ;)

the youngest kept it up for longest, and he developed a bit of a phobia about it, wouldn't eat or drink on journeys. But even he has now grown out of it, at a younger age than I did!

Another tip: Dr Christopher Green of Toddler Taming fame recommends lemonade rather than milk as a drink on journies, not because it will stop the child being sick, but because a) it's colourless and b) it won't smell nearly as bad on the rebound as anything milky will. It's also quite good for rehydration.

Ginger biscuits may help, and so may keeping your tongue in the hole of a polo or keeping a refresher or love heart sweet on your tongue for as long as possible. Eveyone in the car can play at the polo / refresher game. ;)

The key thing I learned as a child, which is still useful today, is knowing the difference between feeling sick and knowing that I am absolutely going to throw up. Once I get the latter feeling, I know I need to not be in a car or confined space. :rotfl:

I had to laugh at the sheets!! :rotfl:

Because we were so unprepared, she scored a direct hit all down her front and covered her car seat. I now have in the boot a "sick kit": 2 towels, change of clothes, large bottle of water (for drinking and cleaning!), cloths, tissues, wet wipes and Fabreeze!

Well, the very first time I DIDN'T take a change of clothes for each of them on a long journey, thinking they'd outgrown it, both DS1 and DS2 threw up en route. But I think we still had the sheets.

They're generally useful things to have, a nice soft sheet you can snuggle under if you're tired, wrap your teddy in if he's tired, hide under if it's sunny, mop your drink up with, catch crumbs from your snacks ...

If you still have any cot sheets, they're an ideal size!

  • I had the same problem until I reached the age of 15. Eating pickled products and mint sweets while I felt ill, helped me.
