When I was a child we lived in Rayleigh in Essex. I'm talking about the 1960's/early 70's and the only toyshop was a small independant one in the highstreet.

Other than that it was your mum treating you to something from her green shields stamp book!

Anyway, a trip to the toyshop was simply magical. The shop was tiny, smaller than my living room and it had a tiny upstairs too.

For a young child it was fabulous to gaze at wonderment at everything crammed onto the shelves. I still remember the two women who worked in the shop. They knew the kids names and what you liked. It was a lovely personal service.

Fast forward and I remember going into a toys r us store for the first time in Basildon, I Essex. I felt overwhelmed and the glare of the overhead lighting was horrible. Yes I have bought lots from there over the years but oh how I harken back to the days of yore when the little toyshop in the highstreet was quite simply, paradise.

Yes I think you are right. When my 2 were small we had a lovely toy shop in our town where I bought all their pressies. Also as my 2 had birthdays in early January they usually had bargain pressies from the same place from their after Xmas sale. I agree it was easier then. Also when I was a child I remember how excited I was to get a new school satchel with a satsuma and a sugar mouse in it for my Xmas gift. My old Dad who is 90 and has dementia always told us he only had a sugar pig each year. We searched around a few years ago and managed to get him one.
  • I've come over all nostalgic now!

I found this of the shop in 1984 http://www.flickr.com/photos/visibledarkness/3330850253/in/set-72157615326802989/
Went to the paper shop - it had blown away.
  • Goodnight all.

rose that was a lovely post about finding a sugar pig for your dad. I've not had a sugar mouse in years. Come to think of it my last recollection was on holiday in Paignton in Devon circa 1974!

    Sweet hamster dreams everyone .

I hate huge warehouse-type shops - I've never been to a Toy R Us, and never will (-:

We got some for my Dad last year - from an online shop doing old-fashioned sweets, and he was well chuffed.

I see the next lot of playtraders on play.com have stuck their hammies on for £35 - they must have seen that the £30 ones that have been on for a couple of days eventually sold so thought they'd try for a fiver more, ha, ha. The £40 car is still there though, don't think they'll get rid of that anytime soon at that price. Then again if you're daft enough to pay £35 for a hamster, then I suppose the car / garage must seem like a bargain in comparison at 40 quid :rotfl:

We have a new old fashioned sweet shop opened in our town so I am going tommorow to get the mice because I usually get one each for my kids of 26 and 23 and I think I will ask the lady about getting me a pig because I dont think Dad will be around much longer. Nite
