I love making caramel slices, and banoffee pie by boiling a can of condensed milk, to make the caramel. But yesterday i went to get a can and it cost £1:75!!! Its cheaper to buy ready made slices if i have to pay that.
Ive tried to make my own caramel before without the condensed milk and it just tasted like burnt sugar. Any tips?! i need my sticky gooey treat!

It only takes a second to say 'Thanks, you just saved me a few quid!'

you could try and make your own condensed milk first? might be cheaper. I've never tried but Rhonda Jean has a recipe that might worth a go on her down to earth blog it's on this page just scroll down a bit

then you would just have turn it into caramel yourself like on this recipe for banoffie pie

It is even cheaper in Home Bargains 89p. To the op. You have to stir like crazy all the time it is boiling, it is very easy to burn. Also have a washing up bowl full of cold water ready to put the pan in as soon as the caramel starts to thicken. This stops it cooking any more. Having said and done all that, there are always a few burnt bits in mine. I just cover it with choclate and no one notices.Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination:beer:

Where did you pay £1.75 per tin? I checked on our Tesco.com and it was around £1.18 (it was yesterday I checked and the mind is a bit boggy!), they also seemed to have a cheaper just under a pound version but with no photo or details.
I might have a go at making my own, the blog linked to above looks fab.Piglet
