I certainly do not know the ins and outs of such checks but I know that when I worked for Vodafone years ago many foreign student accounts were written off as they just left the country without paying.
There were more checks in place and sometimes a deposit taken etc but when the debt exceeded the deposit the acount holders were not that bothered!0 -
OP - putting the judgements of others aside for one moment -
If it is statute barred (i.e. no contact in the last 6 years I think and you haven't acknowledged the debt in that time) then you don't have to pay it back, even if they contact you when you're back in the UK.. You can then refuse as it's statute barred I think.
I don't care what others think - I wouldn't pay if I didn't have to, but I am doing so because I do (different situation).
