Overdue tax and amount dispute

Hi, I am overdue on my tax and despite not being self employed since March 2007 they are continuing to charge me as if I am self employed so from the original amount I owed (around £1000) it is now over £3000! I have tried to settle this by calling them and explaining my situation, they told me to call another office so I did who in turn told me to write in about my situation so I did but this seems to have been totally ignored as they keep charging me for being late and adding the amounts I would have to pay if I were self employed!

I am currently working part time and can't even afford to pay off the original amount at present but they refused to set up a monthly payment option if I was disputing the amount owed but they just keep adding to it, can anyone suggest a best course of action for me please?

Thanks in advance,

Phil

You have done everything HMRC has asked and now it seems you are in a pile of letters waiting to be dealt with. I would ask for an appointment at my local tax office and see smeone face to face who will take responsibility for resolving the matter. Meanwhile, you should continue to make payments of the tax which you do owe in order to show willing.

I agree with fengirl. It sounds as though you are being charged for both the outstanding amount due on a previous completed tax return plus possibly a determination for a later year for which they were expecting you to complete a tax return.

Contact your local HMRC Enquiry Centre - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/enq/main.htm

make an appointment and the staff there will be able to tell you what you have to do to resolve the issue. If they issued a tax return which you haven't completed then your only option is to complete it asap. You are legally required to complete a tax return once it has been issued. If you had no self employment then you would just have to declare any other taxable income for the relevant year.

They've probably issued determinations for the years after 2006/07. Totally in agreement with Fengirl, you need to see someone face to face especially if you are finding it hard to pay. Perhaps you didn't fill in your 2007 tax return quite correctly, but you should discuss that with them.

    Thanks for the advice everyone!

I haven't received any further tax returns but they may have been sent to the accountant I was using when I was self employed.

I'll try and get an appointment at the tax office!

    Thanks again!
