presumaby if you have 250 spare each month then you have been saving that ..how much have you saved?

your grandparents probably lived without central heating for much of their lives .. why can't you save up for that?

No, the £250 'spare' each month goes on me enjoying life. Holidays, clothing, paying off other debts etc.

I can't really hang around for heating, since it's been 'colder' both DH & I have developed colds that won't shift. I can't bear the thought of it getting colder in January - March!

And how long you have been with your bank, what other debts you have, how high risk your job/industry might be, and a million other reasons :) Have you checked you credit files recently and if you applied with your own usual bank have you asked them if they can tell you why you were turned down?
Some will turn you down if you haven't been with them long enough... :)

Applied with my own bank first, they said no but wouldn't say why. I went mad saying if I didn't know what to change, how could I improve in their eyes?! Because I will want a loan in the future... I've been with them for 5 years.

I have access to my credit file, but not score. Nothing bad there. No missed payments etc.

If you have equity in your home, could you ask your mortgage lender for a further advance?

£200-£300 per month for all other bills doesn't sound very much and you may have failed an affordability test.

How much existing debt have you got too? if that (with this loan) would be more than 50% of your gross salary that might also send alarm bells ringing about how indebted you are.

    R.

No equity in home according to lender as house worth has dropped, apparently. Though houses in my area HAVEN'T. Tried for a mortgage break, same answer, due to house worth dropping apparently we owe more than the house is worth. They ignored the fact we got £25k off the house price in the first place for 'knowing' the owners.

£200-300 per month is what's left AFTER other bills. As in to do as we wish with, shopping, meals out etc.

My husband has existing debt, but I only have approx £3k in my name & I pick up £21k.

assuming you are financially linked to your husband then they will review his credit file too

how much debt does he have ?

do your credit cards limits allow for the cost of CC if thats the most important issue?

£250 a month buys a lot of jumpers.

Do you have no heating at all, or just don't like what you have? I've got a horrible storage heating blown air thing, which only goes on when it's really cold. So far I haven't had any form of heating on, just bought a couple of thick jumpers, and snuggled under an old duvet on the sofa. I have an immune condition that leaves me prone to colds and viruses (and other nastier things) but I can honestly say I don't come down with anything due to not having central heating!
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.
  • Hi retro, I also had the same problem with my banker when i went in for personal loan., whom i'm have been banking with them for more than 6 years. may09 i purchased a new house as first time buyer and spent few things using 2 credit cards and overdraft (nearly the limit). My intention was to consolidate later on using a loan, which i can afford it. i have a good credit history and on the electoral roll on the new house (voted for the european election in Jun). all they said is "there is not enough equity". they have asked me to come after 3months. Now i have more than 15% equity on my house, so i'm waiting and going in again in dec for the 7k loan (less than what i have asked before). Lets's see...When our bankers can't help, how can others help...???
  • It's likely you've failed the affordability test? Rates are at an historic low - if you have a mortgage, how much spare money (or how short will you be) if there is a shock rise to 10-15% in a few years time to put a halt to inflation?
