I want to buy a Sat Nav - advice?

I want to buy a Sat Nav either a Tom Tom or Garmin. Does anyone have an opinion on which is best and why?
Also they appear to be so many model versions out and it seems that they bring a new model out every year (or less) but it is never clear what differences/improvements there are between the models? Do you think it's worth getting an older model as they are cheaper?
Any advice would be great

My blackberry storm has bult in sat nav. Very handy finding my way about the city on foot. When dealing with the CSA its important to note that it is commonly accepted as unfit for purpose, and by default this also means the staff are unfit for purpose.0

What features are important to you?
- UK + ROI
- Europe

I have just bought Tomtom XL classic V2 for DH from halfords £139.99 but there is a code on hotukdeals to get it delivered for £107.97.
Not sure if I am allowed to post codes on this site but if you google the model you should find it if not PM me and I'll give you the code.
Excellent service ordered at 2pm Sunday and it arrived today.
Don't forget quidco 4%!0 -
When I got mine everyone recommended TomTom over Garmin... except the sales assistant! I got TomTom. I'm not saying it's perfect but I will say that it's damn good. Quite possibly the best £200 I've ever spent (it was a few years ago so they're much cheaper now).0

Do you have to update sat navs these days? Or are they self updating? My DH want one for christmas, and its mainly for local areas, but possibly UK-wide and Europe would be handy for holidays. Any advice would be really appreciated.
Thanks techies!

I too would like to buy a sat nav, getting lost yet again tonight was the final straw
If anyone could give me an idea what would be best for me I would be very grateful because at the moment I'm confused. The features I would like are
UK
Traffic updates with alternatives to traffic jams
Good instructions such as which lane I need to be in
Thanks in advance0 -
I'm just after a basic model with UK maps, speed limit/camera alerts. It won't be used on a dily basis, just on odd occasions. I am looking at Garmin 205 or 215. The 215 is more expensive (newer i think) and i can't see any major differences between them. Want to get the best price I can.0

Which? recomend:
Garmin Nuvi 860T - £351.26 75%
Garmin Nuvi 1490T - £209.98 73%
TomTom GO 930 Traffic - £210 73%
Tom Tom GO 520 - £200 - 73%
Garmin Nuvi 205WT - £102.76 73%
I am going to go for the Garmin Nuvi 205WT as there is not much in the points & it does better at accuracy of directions. it has a 4.3wide screen:T also don't see the point of paying an extra £100 - just off to see the best deals on cashback sites:ANo longer a lurker :A0
