What essentials would you have in your wardrobe?

Hello there.

I have been following the "dressed up or down" thread with interest and just wondered what ladies would consider essentials in their wardrobe?

I really have got to get some new clothes (I own 2 pairs of trousers and one summer dress - and lots of T shirts!) but don't know where to start. I have never thought about wearing skirts, for example. I have one pair of clumpy black shoes and a pair of trainers. Thats it.

Now its getting colder, I see I have one ancient dark blue cardie that I never much liked, an ancient cotton knitted hoodie and an army surplus jacket!

Any ideas?

I volunteer part time in a primary school, go to college and generally run round after my own boys. And I do a lot of walking (live in the middle of nowhere) and have never worn a skirt or anything pink. Or flowery. Or high heels.

I'm 34, by the way!

  • Hi ide say it depends on how you really want to dress for your lifestyle. Practicality is important as you cant really wear high heels if you walk everywhere. If you want to be trendy but casual try maybe leggings with knee high boots and a long jumper. It also depends on your size. Jeans can be dressed up or down and you can wear skirts with flat shoes. I always find some womens jumpers arent that warm and im quite small and i tend to buy small mens jumpers and wear them with leggings or jeans just below the bum lol. with knee length small heeled boots when im running around. I think its important to be warm and comfortable as well as fashionable.

For me essentials are trousers, I can't wear jeans.
Lots of dresses. I say dresses and not skirts because I don't like wearing separates if I can help it and I like to look smart.
Polo neck jumpers which are worn with the trousers or underneath dresses for extra warmth.
    Black pencil skirt.
Plain t-shirts in black and white, long and short sleeved.
    trainers.
pair of killer heels for parties etc
    ballet pumps in black.
    sandals for summer.
    Black cardigan.
    white cardigan.

I was in this predicament a few weeks ago, having lost weight and got rid of most of my wardrobe! Dh gave me some money for my birthday and I now have the following:

2 pairs of jeans - for boots, flats or heels
two pairs of black leggings - Top Shop are better than Next
two boyfriend cardies - one black and one blue
    vests to go under
    black wrap around jersey dress
couple of smart skirts for work
    long warm cardie
couple of dresses which can be worn with heels for going out or over leggings for more casual
    couple of casual skirts

Come over to the dressed up/down post and join in. We're lovely and the fashionistas are sooo helpful :D.
  • For the winter I would go for a couple of jumper dresses black leggings and for comfort black uggs and some leather knee length boots for a smarter option.
  • For me:

    - A good suit
    - Some smart trousers and skirts
    - A selection of brightly coloured jersey tops and/or jumpers
    - Vest tops for layering under jumpers
    - Good pairs of jeans for weekends and going out
    - Casual T-shirts
    - Some decent going out tops
    - Casual boots
    - Smart boots
    - Smart work shoes
    - Trainers/Converse

Obviously this is all dependent on things like what your day involves as some of this may well be useless!

Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")
