Apple's not exempt from problems either...

The fact that you're making such a big deal about this would suggest that Apple products do generally work very well. Otherwise, you wouldn't display such obvious glee when they don't.
Regardless, this is why clean installs are a good idea, and why you should backup your data regularly regardless of what OS you're using.
I don't think I've ever seen an Apple user argue that you shouldn't bother backing up your data because nothing ever goes wrong, but whatever.
No it's more to do with the fact that everyone says they work so well. I just don't happen to believe that, and I've given the proof.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -

If you spent 10 seconds on the web you'll find software and hardware problems that Apple (batteries catching fire most recently) and every other computer company have from time to time, so I'm not sure this is proof! The internet is a "research" tool for the lazy, and why is such usually discounted in higher academic research unless well backed up with other accounts from traditional methods of sciences and literature.
Having used both platforms for nigh-on 20 years personally and professionally (and couldn't manage without either today), I feel I can comment with some accuracy that Apple products in general are far more long lasting and higher quality than anything produced by PC manufacturers (certainly the hardware). I've got 10 year old Mac laptops running the latest OS, still holding a charge! I've got a Mac Plus for the 1980s, which boots and runs fine, hopefully one day it'll be worth a fortune
However top quality products from any good brand should last a long time, it's just that Apple is a premium brand like Levono, or top German car companies, German white goods (blimey the Germans really are good!), etc
Still I've had a Mac crash before way back in 1993, luckily I had a full backup, I've also had PCs crash, come on people computers go wrong from time to time, it's impossible to test every avenue through a software product.
However this doesn't lead to the conclusion that Apple are rubbish, nor Dell. It just leads to the statement that nothing is infallible.0 -

Oh no, it wasn't ever my intention to suggest that Apple products are absolute rubbish. I don't believe they are that either. It was just more to show to the select few that post, "you should've got a Mac" when anything goes wrong with a PC, that Mac's aren't infallible either.;)Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -

By that "logic", nothing in the entire world works well.
Was the Titanic hitting an iceberg proof that boats don't work well?
I could rattle off quite a long list of problems Apple have had over the years, and I still think they're the best. The reason being, I could rattle off an even longer list for everyone else.
So if the idea that Apple are good offends you, perhaps we could agree they're just less crap than everyone else?

The microsoft problems were to do with hitachi according to this http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2009/10/12/sidekick_hitachi/
Apples issue is software related....self inflicted (just read the beeb article).0 -

I wouldn't say it offends me - I just happen to believe that Microsoft computers are just as good as Apple! And the only reason PC's get all the viruses is because they've got such a big share of the market, it's more worthwhile. If the situation was reversed, and Apple had over 90% of the market, no PC's would get viruses, as it wouldn't be worth the hackers time writing them! (However, that's not a good enough reason to make me switch, although everyone's entitled to their opinion!)Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -
Aaaaaaah - Bunch of geeks!

Well just teaches all the Apple's are invincible believers that they should still back up.Survey earnings total 2009 £417, 2010 £875, 2011 £5740

On the bright side, I absolutely love the Chinese handwriting recognition on SNow Leopard!
(The bug sucks big, hairy truck driver's ... . Anyway, I'm just glad I didn't find this out the hard way. Thanks.)0
