Halloween party for care home-ideas for "unscary" decorations

Im organising a halloween party for the care home where i work, but am very limited in time (both because of how close halloween is and very long working week leading up to it)

I'm not planning to have any raffle type things as the xmas fair will be along quite soon and we had a summer fair too.

But do need a few ideas to make it Halloweeny! Due to the nature of the illnesses of the residents (EMI home mostly dementia and alzeimers type conditions) i have to be VERY careful of the type of decorations etc used.

Been looking around Tescos and places and the majority of the decorations may be abit scary. Does anyone have any ideas of where may sell more friendly ones if that makes sense?

Could you maybe make some orange black and purple bunting? - string it around the care home and add some pumpkins here and there :)

On a completely different tangent, you could celebrate 5th November instead. If your patients have dementia etc, I'm guessing they are elderly. Hallowe'en as a holiday would not have been a celebration for them when they were younger, but 5th November would. They would have gone around collecting 'penny for the Guy' . You could use bits of tinsel to make 'sparklers' or 'fireworks'.
5th Nov also gives you a bit of extra time.

Thanks for all the ideas, i really like the paper chains/bunting in black and orange-simple and unscary.

Its a combined halloween and bonfire party (mainly due to the fact that halloween is on the saturday so good day for relatives to visit.) and im on annual leave for the week of fireworks night (thanks to having a cat that is terrified of fireworks.)

I had hoped to have a few little fireworks, but spoke to my manager and he said no, as it will more than likely upset some of the residents and also means doing all sorts of health and safety and fire requirements. (even for a sparkler!) so thats why its more focused on halloween, although i will add some handmade firework decorations as suggested.
  • tinsel looks firework-ish if you can dig out the crimbo decs early and maybe pin them up in spirals or something.

    Hi,

If you have any £1 shops around where you live, then they are definately worth a look.
I got some decorations for my Boys to have up in their bedrooms (they have them up already ) and they aren't scary ones.
They also had some nice decorations like tinsel, but with little pumpkins or ghosts on.

Thank you all. Have just been to poundland and found some fantastic, non-scary decorations which will be perfect. Now just to decide on my spooky menu for the food!

good luck i think it is a lovely idea that you care for them so much :) my aunties care home had an easter bonnet parade they made them themselves, it is so nice to see people including them in things rather than being left in front of a TV
