What to claim for when sick

A good friend has been in hospt for 4 weeks. He has been diagnosed with cancer and will need Cheamo and lots of time off work (A labouring job) He gets his SSP ok and will continue to do so . He is 63 and has a mortgage still. His wife works 20/30 hrs a week but will need time off to look after him during his treatment and can only get unpaid carers leave. They cannot live on SSP alone but what else can they claim? They have virtually no savings.

You need to post this sort of question in the benefits forum.
