best before date on steak?

Options
Hi,

I have finally found a good market that sells meat that actually tastes like meat. So the last saturday I bought a load of steak and bits and bats. I have some steak still left over and I dont know if it will be fit to eat.

Obviously they dont come with a best before date from a market so do you think (a week on) it will still be ok.

I had a sniff and it just smells like the market

How long a date does steak from the supermarket have on it? I'm not the best person to ask cos I am obsessional with dates and would have either frozen, used it or thrown it away after 3 days.

It was behind some stuff so forgot to freeze it :o

I think its normally about 5-7 days or so on packed steak, not sure though

I cant decide wheather because it is fresher then it will have a longer life or becuase it isnt in an air tight pack then it will be shorter

Why on earth do marketers not advertise the best before date on them

I think supermarket steak normally has 4-6 days on it depending on the supermarket.
Whereabouts is the market you have found?
Sorry I can't help on the OP but I wouldn't want to say its ok and you use it and it makes you ill.

You have to ask the butcher next time how long it's ok to eat till:D

I live in a large market town and haven't bought meat from the supermarket for years. I find it better quality and loads cheaper, but I've no idea about dates.

    Sorry, not of much help:o

Supermarket meat is vac packed so it will have a shelf life of 5-8 days on it. From a butcher(my uncle is one) it should last about 3-4 days in the fridge (wrapped properly) but as well as smelling it look at it if it starts to discolour around the fat area throw it away

I agree with shammyjack. Your eyes and nose will tell you if it's not ok to eat. I don't pay any attention to 'best before' dates, they are there to make money for the supermarket, not for our benefit at all.
