The AA Charitable Trust is giving away 250 free 'Drive Smart' courses to MoneySavers who have passed their test in the last 12 months. The aim of the course is to help qualified drivers improve their safety as well cutting emissions (and therefore saving money) on fuel through fuel-efficient driving techniques.
Of course you can also find a full guide to driving to cut petrol costs in the Cheap Petrol and Diesel guide for tips on driving more efficiently.
The course consists of two one-hour sessions seven days apart with a fully-qualified AA driving instructor. You'll be sent a workbook to work through before your practical sessions and you'll be asked to practice your driving in between the two sessions.
[title=http://images2.moneysavingexpert.com/images/dp/wtd_underline.gif]How do I apply?[/title]
Fill out the online form at Drive Smart and enter the code ‘AL#1’ after your name in the ‘Surname’ field.
The AA Charitable Trust will then look at your application to see if you meet the criteria and will phone you within about 10 working days to arrange your sessions if you are successful. Priority will be given to those that have a motoring offence or have been involved in an accident.

You need to take the course within 3 months of applying and if you get a place you’ll be asked to complete a follow-up questionnaire three, six and twelve months after to measure how well you think you have improved your driving skills and fuel economy since the course.
As the number of courses for MoneySavers is limited to 250 not everyone that applies will be able to get a free place. You may be contacted with an offer to pay around £60 for the course but you are under no obligation to pay just by applying for the free sessions.
