    NOT the same thing!
I don't know which you want to use for the loo (I tend to just stick bleach in, it seems to work )
But they are def not the same, soda crystals mildly irritant, caustic soda will cause severe chemical burns-be careful!
( a while ago, I know of a pet owner who had heard (on the internet:mad:)to use washing soda/soda crystals to make their dog vomit after eating something shouldn't, client used caustic soda instead, dog did not make it :(:(:()

    oh my...that's awful!

OP, I use caustic soda for unblocking drains - soda crystals for cleaning. Hope that helps.
  • thanks for replies :T

and for explain difference between caustic soda and soda crystals :o

with regard the wc it's nine years old and i notice the very base of the pan is discoloured which is probably mostly limescale as well as 9 years of use.

what should i use to shift this would caustic soda be any good.

If it is limescale, and I would assume it is first, I would use either vinegar or Harpic Power Plus.

But first you need to get the water out of the bowl, other wise it just dilutes whatever you use.

To do this get a toilet brush and push it into the bowl quite fast, a good sharp jab does it. Wait a second or to for the water to settle again and remove the brush, but not to quickly. Repeat this a few times and you will see that you are pushing a little water out of the bowl each time. Once you have done this you will see what is happening and get the hang of it. Then you'll be able to get a good rhythm going and have the water out in no time.

Once you have most of the water out you can either fill the bowl with vinegar or use Harpic Power Plus. Leave it as long as possible, over night if you can and the limescale will be dissolved.

Edit: Just noticed you use toilet duck, I've never used it but if it says it dissolves limescale then give it a try as you already have it. But the main thing is to get the water out of the bowl first.

I use toilet bombs that fizz up and remove dirt and limescale under the waterline, I then slosh the liquid around the pan with the loo brush to clean that before flushing. Home Bargains seem to stock the cheapest.

i was looking at the bath bomb ingredients and it appears citric acid is the main active ingredient (as well as sodium bicarbonate for the fizz)

I bought both at the weekend.

Can I use caustic soda down plugholes to burn away any gunk (hair) or will it melt any plastic pipes.

I've just realised its in a plastic bottle:o:o:o:o:o:o

Is there any reason why I shouldn't use it for plugholes?

This is hydrochrolic acid so no wonder it works. As with caustic soda this can cause serious burns and fumes can cause breathing difficulties.

God yes, be careful with it:eek:

I always put the lid down & make sure everyone knew it was in the loo.

But it sure cleans a loo like new.

Nice when you move in somewhere;) Thats when I use it.
