Old Style Kettles (whistling hob ones)

  • I have an electric cooker and an electric kettle but I only boil two cups of water at a time in my kettle I very rarely put more than I need in to boil. I used to have a whistler but that was when I had a gas cooker If I remember I often put the spare boiled water into a flask for the next cup ,or make an extra cup of coffee and bung that in a flask as well. Oh I am so stingy when it comes to electric aren't I
  • righto daisy, you've started me off now, I've spent all afternoon looking at whistling kettles on t'internet (sad i know but the kids are off poorly so I have to do something ;))

I have some john lewis vuchers squirrelled away from pigsback and wondered what fellow osers think about this one...http://www.johnlewis.com/Electrical+Appliances/Small+Appliances/Food+and+Drink+Preparation/Kettles/539/230214370/Product.aspx
I know I can get one cheaper (I like the le creuset ones) but if i have free vouchers, may as well use them.

D&DD- you don't need any more gadgets, step away from the kettles!
I make either a full pot of filter coffee and chuck it in the flask or boil a whole kettle and shove it in the flask.

Kaz I now need some screen wipes :rotfl:

Well I've been looking today and haven't really seen anything I want just yet and I do usually use a flask when I'm going to be home for the day :D
Problem is I don't know how much longer my current one is going to last as the water gauge is feeling decidedly 'crumbly'

I use a whistling kettle, but then I have a rayburn so it won't use electric anyway.

  • I've always used one and am very happy with it. If you're making tea or coffee for the masses it's always best to put it on to boil a bit before you're guests arrive cos I have known friends to "pop in for a cuppa" and leave without one cos it hasn't boiled!

As has been mentioned before - the flask/boiling water setup saves a lot of time.

If you get a stainless steel one like mine (we got it from Ikea - but about 12 years ago probably) you can clean it with a scrubber and it comes up like new each time.

Plus - you have the advantage of being able to have hot drinks and hottie bottles in the event of a power cut - something which happens round our way on a fairly frequent basis.

Again, as has already been said, you can't ignore a squealing kettle for very long! And it just gets louder and LOUDER!

 Oh No I think we may have just hit a snag...rereading through and thinking about DS3 and noise...he has probs with certain 'pitches' too I'm just wondering now if it will send him off on one with the whistling...
I saw some on amazon which play tunes and do birdwhistles  but they were obcene amounts of money...Can anyone advise me on whistles :rotfl: I need one thats not too shreiky *is that even a word????* Sort of wooden whistley pitch rather than screaming..:rotfl:
  • We bought an Oxo Easy Grip one from TKMaxx about a year ago and is great! It does take a while longer to boil but we have noticed a difference in the leccy bill, so we honestly dont mind.

Also, if its just for making tea/coffee through the day, we sometimes boil a full kettle then put the remaining boiling water into a flask for drinks through the day....it all helps!!
