Best way to change Euro's into Sterling??

Can someone give me any useful tips about changing Euro's into Sterling? A friend of mine who lives in Ireland is sending some money over and wants to send a cheque, but I'm concerned that I may get stung with large bank handling/ exchange fee's. (I'm with Lloyds - at the moment!)
I've heard some mixed reviews about wiring money via Western Union but am posting this to see if anyone has any good moneysaving ideas!
