I gave up smoking a year ago and never looked back, after all how can you call yourself a money saving expert when you waste so much on a nasty habit.

Well for anyone that does try and quit good luck.

  • A cheaper way to give up is reading a book mentioned on another thread:

The book costs "about" £6? Patches are available free in some places, how is that cheaper? ??? ::)

A word of warning regarding anyone thinking of taking the tablets ZYBAN.  I took these a couple of years ago, and YES they did take the desire to smoke away BUT at what cost!!!!!!!!! I didn't feel well at all, but just put it down to withdrawal symptoms, I live in a village and bumped into the nurse, she asked me how things were going.........I replied I hadn't smoked in 3 weeks, then she said "are you SURE you feel ok?" I told her I was feeling a bit grotty etc, but thought that was normal. She said come over NOW to the clinic, cutting things short, she called the doctor, who told me I had to STOP IMMEDIATELY taking the pills!
I ask myself what could have happened if I had continued taking them!!!!!!
A few friends told me afterwords they were getting worried about me too! I hadn't a clue what I was like apart from feeling horrible.
    I went back to smoking :-[ my usual 40 a day :-[
I am happy to say I gave up 9 months ago  :With the help of patches, and the inhalator, which in actual fact I still use occasionally today!
I would say STEER CLEAR of ZYBAN they can have dreadful side effects......and in extreme cases death!

P.S. i was NOT taking any other medication either!

  • Re Zyban -BE VERY CAREFUL!!

I have a friend (male. mid 40's) who took these and didn't tell anyone, so we all marvelled at his willpower in giving up the cigs "cold turkey". All went well till he was rushed in to hospital with all the symptoms of a suspected brain tumour - we were all beside ouselves, never mind how he felt about the situation. However, after about 7 days of tests and obs and finding nothing, a new doc asked him if he had taken Zyban - he 'fessed up and was sent home that night!!

Apparently it transpires that this is the "worst" side effect - that it appears that you have all the symptoms of a brain tumour, obviously without the tumour. However, he never smoked again, he learnt his lesson and his "brush with death" cured him for once and for all.

I actually finally stopped smoking 6 years ago - I held my dad's hand as he died of lung cancer the year before (incredible since he gave up smoking 15 years before his death) but even that did not stop me - I eventually had accupuncture BUT I did not just go "anywhere", I went to a specific accupuncturist in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire - if you are serious about stopping and want to know any more and could get yourselves to Hebden Bridge, please PM me for details (no connection, just a very satisfied customer, he has a 95% success record, I know many people who have been there and all have stopped). I have absolutely no willpower whatsoever so I am living proof that it DOES work and is relatively effortless. If you are in a health plan (Sovereign, HSA or similar) you can even claim back the cost of it.

Either way IMHO it is money well spent!!

These patches are great fun. Stick them to a non-smoker whilst they are sleeping and after a couple of weeks watch them get more and more frantic for nicoten, but they don't know why ;D
