Consumer electronic@ branded or own brand?

The well known reviewing website (you know which one...) has published a mini-review comparing branded and own brand electronic products.
In a nutshell:
TV: branded products are better
Radio: own brand OK unless you want great sound quality
Set-top boxes: branded generally better with some exceptions
My rule is that if it's something I don't use much, I buy on a whim, or I'm not sure how much I'm going to use it, then I will buy cheap.
Others I will invest on, but generally not buy the most expensive (e.g. Sony TVs), unless they are really worth it.
