Speeding Fine in the Republic

Live in Belfast but was caught speeding on the motorway on the way to Dublin by the guards - doing 129kmph. Now have got fine for 80 Euro - as the cross jurisdiction law has not been passed yet to transfer points accross borders does anyone know whether I am legally obliged to pay this.If I dont will the baliffs be at the door next month Thanks.

You shouldn't have been breaking the law - pay up!!

    Yeah, pay up.

This site isn't about advising people on how to avoid punishment if they break the law.

If you had killed someone while you were speeding you'd have to face justice so just do the same in this case. Be glad that it's only a fine.

Hang on guys. Both comments are a bit harsh. 129kph is 80mph which isn't that fast. There has been campaigns to raise our limit to 80mph as motorways are the safest roads to travel on. I'm sure many people on this board have done 80mph on our M2 here and I'd say the motorways down south are far superior to ours.

fj1200. I think the psni have some arrangement with the gardai to call with you at your house if you don't pay up. Might be wrong about this. Maybe someone else can help.

You will be subject to arrest if stopped by the Gardai the next time you travel down South, so you might be best paying it.

bad luck, the m'way speed limit is 120kmh isn't it? so technically you were only 5 mph over the limit which is even within the margin of error of a speedo. you wouldn't have got pulled for that here is it isn't even 10%. still, i'd pay up if i were in your shoes (and indeed once had to cough up £IR50 about 6 or 7 years ago). it's not worth the hassle if they chase you for it

    Hi,

my hubby had the same problem a couple of years ago, he had to pay the 80euro fine at the garda station and they told him the points would not go on the licence in the north, but if he was caught again he would be arrested and brought straight to court and that this would ensure the points were put on to his northern licence, hence he bought a speed detector as driving is his livelyhood. and no before you people go down my throat, he was only 5mph over limit, which unless ur perfect im sure you have been at some time or another.

Would it not be easier then to just go 5mph slower?

They can,t put points on a northern licence there talking crap.but if you don,t paY up and get caught the next time you could be arrested.would imagine it,s because your from the north you got booked as they would tun a blind eye to anyone doing under 130
