Entitled to tax rebate?

Hello,

I received two separate tax code notifications from inland revenue this week - one saying that my tax code was 576L a temporary job that I left about 5 years ago and another code 24BR for my current employer .

Does this mean that I have been paying emergency tax throughout my employment with my current employer ( who I have been working for since the Nov 2007). If that is the case, does it also mean that I was paying emergency tax for my previous employer who I worked for for about 18months? If so am I entitled to a tax rebate and is there a way of calculating how much I will receive?

I currently earn £24000, I was paid £21000 by my previous employer.
Any help on this would be appreciated.

  • Have a look at the P60 which you should have got in April/May - what tax code is on that? Also check the tax code on your latest payslip. If either of these are BR you may have paid too much tax.

    It does sound like the Revenue have got a little mixed up with your tax code now. You need to contact them (the number is on the PAYE coding notice) and tell them who your current employer is and that you have not worked for the other one for 5 years.
  • As Rolo says if you look and think you may have paid too much, contact HMRC (use their website for your local address) and if you provide them with all of the information on your earnings and tax paid they'll recalculate it for you.

    As an individual with no notice to complete a tax return they are not obliged to check your tax calculation this is for you to do and to tell them if there is an issue.

    Good luck, remember ultimately if you've paid too much you'll always get it back.
