Freezer broken down ??

Hi There
Can anyone help me out here. My son bought a brand new Fridge Freezer from Comet about 18 months back and never took out extended warranty as way to much.
He phoned me yesterday to tell me that the freezer has stopped working and completely defrosted.
I am so annoyed as I would have thought it would have lasted longer than this.
I can recall seeing a thread somewhere about consumer rights saying that although the guarantee had expired there was still a basis for claiming that goods were not up to standard and you could claim repair or replacement as it did not live upto its expected lifespan. Or words to that effect.
Can anyone help point me in the right direction here I cannot afford to replace or repair it nor can my son.
Thanks
Crystal
P.s Dont know where best to put this thread so put in DFW and In My Home (I think)

Hiya!
It's the Sales of Goods Act 1979 (as amended), where it states (more or less) that it is the responsibility of the retailer to provide goods that last a reasonable amount of time.
The word 'reasonable' is key, as it does depend on the item as to how long it should last.
I managed to get my computer repaired by the retailer when it completely shut down 2 months out of warranty (I didn't buy the extended warranty either). They told me it was a 'goodwill gesture' (ok!) but it's worth doing. Your local Trading Standard office is always a good source of information on things like this.

you may find this government site of interest

in the first instance your son should contact comet and ask for a free repair/replacment and see what they say. in the end if they refuse he can take them to the small claims court.0 -

Thanks to all for the replies. I will get him to go down to Comet with a written letter of complaint for the manager. Just incase they dont want to entertain his verbal compliant.
Also it was purchased on my credit card but he paid it back in full. But think that would be a worthless exercise to persue as over 12 months ago and I am not one of there highly thought of customers any longer.
Thanks again everyone

Also, if he has lost any food as a result of this, he might be able to claim some money from his house contents insurance - just a thought.

Good luck.
Thanks rkh001
Unfortunately he doesnt have house insurance. He is on sick benefit and by the time he has paid all his standard bills he has about £14 a week left to shop and buy anything else he needs. So cannot afford the home insurance in current situation.
