Thank you for all your ideas, I will definitely try kedgeree and fish cakes.
PipneyJane I think the main problem that my family have with the kippers is the bones although the strong taste is also a problem.
I love fish pate and had never thought of doing that so I will definitely give that a go.
I will get some kippers out of the freezer now.:)0 -

Marinated kippers are delicious with crusty bread and salad, and taste less strongly fishy (although more strongly lemony/vinegary/oniony depending on the marinade!)
I had a recipe that used loads of lemon juice, which almost dissolved the smaller bones. I can't find the exact one online but there are plenty to choose from if you google marinated kippers.
Here's one:

Try them in a fish pie.
I was visiting my Mum one day, and she had one of those tea-time cooking programs on the television. One of the chefs said to use kippers in a fish pie. I did a bit of a double take, but then I realised that kippers are smoked herring.
So, that weekend, I did us a fish pie with a couple of cheap vacuum-packed kipper fillets, and it was absolutely delicious. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
with us, any kind of fish goes nice in mash, obviously you'll need to pick the bones out first but mixing it in with mash is really nice and gets even my not so fish friendly daughter to eat it0
