Our latest bill (2 adults in a 2 bedroomed modern house) was £47 for 3 months. We use energy saving bulbs, switch everything off at the mains when we're not in. Other than the fridge, obviously. Oh, and the water is heated via our gas central heating.

I think it sounds really cheap. I pay £40 per month for my electricity. Its a modern 3 bed semi, 2 adults, we're not at home during the day, and we switch things off when not in use.

Don't forget that the cost per unit has gone up a little bit so that could why your bills have gone up to cover.

I use to have a one bedroom flat and had a fridge freezer on all day with a saver plug on. Cook by electric, use energy saving light bulbs and I still had quarterly bills of between £40 and £45. And I could never get it down either not matter how hard I tried.

And I turn everything off. I do this not for saving money but from a safety point of view.

I think bills at the moment are between £15-£20 a month. And I have fridge freezer and a chest freezer running all day. Both A-rated.

No tellys. But computers are on for hours on end. As I am home all day at the moment. We no cook by gas. Could be why for last 5 months bill for gas was £127

I would say that you are doing well on your bills if you are only £16 a month.

I've just been having stresses about this myself today. We are with powergen and were paying £110 per month for gas and electric but they've sent a letter to put it up to £164......!
My hubby thinks that the tumble dryer is our main culprit and I guess since we do on average of 16 loads of washing and drying a week he's probably right!
So have told everyone dryer is now off limits. Am going to try to just have the lights on that are needed. Not leave stuff on standby and turn off all the pc's that can be turned off when not in use.
Problem is, I have no idea what kind of consumption/ bills I should be expecting!

does turning everything off at the walls and unplugging it really make that much of a difference?

Ouch you are right as I read it as 16 per month. So we are talking about £64 a month.

How many people did you say where living there. As I am home all day. Don't have the computer on all day. But computer and radio are on for part of the day. And washing machine a couple of times a week.

Biggest consumers are going to be things like tumble driers.

Have they just be estimating your bills rather than reading them? As that could be another reason why they have risen.

If I was you I would start by taking meter readings everday at the same time for a couple of weeks. To see how much you are using. Of course during the winter you will use. But this will help you to get a better idea of what you are using.

As I said I turn everything off apart from the fridge and freezer when I am going out. So everything goes off at the wall as it is all on extension leads. I even turn off my bedside radio at the wall every morning.

Also look to see if you get your electric cheaper from another supplier.
