seriously though there will be a lot of people can't afford to pay the £50 - so does a dog become a luxury then?

It's a great day for singing a song / It's a great day for moving along / It's a great day for morning to night / It's a great day for everybody's plight.

most of the people who buy a licence....will continue to buy a licence.....

those who never have bought a licence...well they probably never will....

cats should be licenced and not allowed to roam free...especially when they !!!! in peoples gardens...I could just hear the dog warden if I allowed my dog to !!!! in a neighbours garden, having said that, I would love to let him, she's the neighbour from hell that lets her cat roam, feeds 9 or 10 pigeons AND has the cheek to throw bread and nuts on the ground for them and the two grey squirrels she treats as "friends of the forrest"...
    I'm now a retired teacher... hooray ...:j

Those who can do, those who can't, come to me for lessons:cool:

  • The main reason I dont have a dog is that I cant afford to give it a good home - I cant afford the bills/insurance and food at the moment although I long to have one in my home as I was brought up with lots of different pets as a child. Im sure most people's dogs eat at least £50 of food a month, so surely £50 would be manageable to most responsible owners? But I totally agree - if you dont pay the £5, and let your dog roam and poop everywhere in an irresponsible way at the moment, then why would you suddenly pay £50 and tidy up after it? This proposed system is charging the wrong people and who is going to police it. I say police the poop and parks, with on the spot fines so that I can go for a walk without my children treading in a "nice little surprise".
Feel free to thank me, it makes my toes tingle and my ears go warm :T

Another Tax on the "Soft Touches" i.e. the responsible person rather than the Irresponsible Person.

As a dog owner I have complanied 3 times to the local council about a person in our area who, as stated on previous posts, puts the dog out in the morning and brings it back in at night. They have written back twice saying they have visited the person and had a "talk" with them.. still to this day they still let their Mut out during the day.

    Edit:
So what difference will a £50 Licence fee make I ask??????

20kg (or is 15/25kg) bag of dog food -£30.

    this lasts 2 months.

Thats for 2 dogs (cairn terrier + medium sized dog)

They also get dinner scraps mixed in with the dry mix.

Once a week , trip to the butchers to get dog bones (FOC)

I've just got depressed. Cost of One Large Breed Dog.

(Kibble £25 and 4 Whole Chickens £10), marrow bones free from butchers
    Food Monthly Total Cost: £35.
    + Annual Vet bill Booster/flea drops/worming etc £100 a year
    + Annual Pet Insurance: £180
    + Annual Council License £5

£58.75 a month it cost us to keep our pet, that does not include the £6 for doggy school and pigs ears for treats.

You never really realise when you buy a puppy just how much it cost you. Should have bought a budgie : o
  • Thanks for posting this. I am totally furious.

I have 2 dogs. I pay the £5 licence each year for them, have them microchipped and they do not leave the house without us. There waste is lifted immediately also.

Compare that to the next door neighbour who has 2 dogs who have never been licensed who walk the streets all day and leave their waste everywhere, try to eat the postman and run after other people's dogs. They have been reported time and time and they get a £10 fine which they laugh at.

According to that article this will be a consultation. Lets get together on this and try to stop it. If it comes into play only mugs like myself will pay it whilst those who wouldn't pay the £5 a year will continue to get away with it.
