  • Thanks for all the advice and here is what I have done been very busy.

Have applied for a new credit card with the transfers of the barclaycard and egg to go on that, with an interest free period. See how that goes.

Also have spoken to SKY and have got changed my package so I am now just paying £34.99 a saving of £15 I know only £15 but as Tesco says have little helps.

Beginning to feel a little better now.

Have had another idea of getting some money and maybe renting the spare room out for awhile. But I am not sure if how much I can charge or if I have to let anyone know (other then the OH) that I wish to do this

Again thanks for all the help please keep the advice coming. I can see a little light at the end of the tunnel now, here is to making it a big light

Well done on what you've done so far :)

I thought the life ins seems high too - perhaps use this site to research to see if you can get a better deal?

I don't think you have to declare the lodger and it would be a great income for while things were tight. How about checking in local free ads/cards in windows to see how much others are charging for similar rooms?

    Was the wedding fabulous? :)

  • Hi there,

By the way the £20,000 was the wedding and the honeymoon, it was the best day of my life and the honeymoon was just a dream.

Now for paying it all back

  • HI wanttobedebtfree,

Good for you taking contol and taking positive steps to turn your financial situation around.

You need to make your OH realise how SERIOUS the situation is and if nothing is done the house could be on the line in the future (e.g if one of you lost your jobs).

So you are right, NOW is the time to take action and things CAN be turned around.

The problem is not your income (thats quite good )it what you are spending it on thats the problem.

1)Both should keep a spending diary. If either of you won't do this you are not taking the situation seriously enough.

    2) In Nov the car loan finishes. Use this "spare" cash to throw at debts.

3)Make your OH realise this is serious. Don't book no holidays, new sofas , weekend away, upgrade car. Tell him all that can be done once the debt is paid off. That is the ONLY priority.

    4) Have a financial heart to heart and draw up a action plan to tackle this together as a couple for both of your futures.

You can turn this around but NOW is the time for SUSTAINED action and discipline.

    Good luck & keep posting.

  • The sky TV needs to go. Are you sure you can not down size the package ?check the contract. This will be a wake up call for your OH.

If you can possibly get rid of the 2nd car do it.

Do you need life insurance i.e you have no dependants. (it seems expensive to me, maybe scrap it and take it up again when you are debt free)

show you are willing to make sacrifices and you mean business. Tell your OH its about working for both of your financial futures and security.

Every POUND counts every POUND paid back of debt increases your families security.

Get your OH to read this thread and get him on this forum and we can pull his ears for you and give him his "light bulb" moment !!!!!

Its a case of trying to get him to understand that you want to tackle this together as a team, husband and wife, once you have paid of your debts, all that money you are wasting on interest you can spend on holidays or a car or use to pay your mortgage of early.

It needs to be a joint project between both of you. If one of you lost your jobs you would be in big financial trouble within months and the house would be on the line.

Now is the time for action while you have the income to pay of the debts.

You need to tell him you want both of you to fight the debt because you love him and he loves you and you want to build a strong financial future together.
  • I can't get out of the sky due to the contract, but I have got the price down to £34.99 instead of the £50

Hopefully the OH's lightbulb moment will come soon....

meantime, have you thought about Ebaying anything? its amazing what people will buy!

Or (and I've done this and it is hard work) taking on a bar job for a couple of nights a week - minimum wage brings in about £30 + tips, which will cover your petrol & free up some money to pay off the debt.

Well done for posting - it's hard to face up to but it will get better, honest!

Maybe needed for mortgage...... if you can change it, try Tesco - they often have extra points offers on too!
