Is this legit?

I recently bought a new guitar on a finance deal. One payment up front and then 9 subsequent payments via DD.

The instruction and collection of the DD then goes from the guitar shop to their apparent affiliate musical finance company. The problem is then partly my fault because I hadn't kept tabs on it, but they hadn't taken payments in August and September.

They then rang me the other day and said that my September DD had come back as "no instruction" and could I pay it now with a debit card? She also said that my August payment had gone through fine. I obviously told them I would look into it with the bank before paying them anything. I rang my bank and they said that a DD instruction had never been set up - indeed my statements reflected this as no payments had gone out in either August or September.

Two thoughts spring to mind, as they're obviously pretty incompetent. They haven't received any money in August but are adamant they have.

1. How do I know they're who they say they are and my DD had not just somehow been intercepted between the shop and the bank? Is this feasible? It would explain them being completely incorrect about having received the August payment.

2. Is it some kind of scam whereby they don't take any money for a few months then demand it all at once? When I then refuse or offer to extend the term of the loan they start adding on their own admin charges and so on?

Also, if it is just a genuine mistake then what are my rights? Do I have to pay them 2 payments in one month, or can I just ask/demand that they add an extra month on the end instead?

I'm just a bit worried is all and I don't want to pay them by card until I've got it cleared up.

Someone put my mind at rest.

Thanks.

I may be over simplifying this but why don't you just call the shop where you bought the guitar and clarify all your queries:confused:

They can confirm what company should be dealing with the payments and direct debit and help you get the direct debit set up correctly.

    HTH :)
