When good coffee goes bad...

I have this recurring problem with coffee. It shrivels up and eventually becomes a solid lump.

I just can't afford to keep throwing it away.

1) What can I do to stop it happening?
2) What can I do with the lump of coffee?

Thank you.:rotfl:

    Is this instant coffee?

Do people keep putting wet spoons in the jar?

Are you leaving it in its original bag unsealed? Try using a container with an airtight lid.

I have a tin for mine, with a 'kilner-jar-style' clip closure - it also has one of those 'things' in the lid (with something in that's designed to absorb any moisture) - works a treat. It actually came free with some 'Taylor's of Harrogate Coffee' about 10yrs ago.

Instant coffee just gets kept in an airtight jar and never gets chance to 'go solid' - total coffee addict in this house ;).

    1. keep it in an airtight container in a dry cupboard
    buy smaller jars
never put a wet spoon near it :D

  • If the house is humid keep it in the fridge,
I have a friend who had this problem with salt and coffee both going solid inside the jars and was solved instanly by just putting them in the fridge!

Has gone to play on her own little world for a bit..... but its ok the voices in her head came too so she's not alone ;)
  • freeze it ( stays powdery ) stays fresher for much longer...we used to do it in Aus...I still do it here tho

Good post. Thanks all. We're not coffee drinkers in our house, so even small jars of coffee often went this way (never wet spoons). I have to admit though, we usually ask mother for a little of hers when we have a coffee-drinker coming to visit lol

Once it has gone to a lump you an rescue it by adding boiling water to the jar and using the resulting liquid to make cups of coffee by diluting it further in the mug.
First time add the hot water and milk first and then add you concentrated coffee liquid so you can judge how much you need by colour.
