Changing freezers

I have bought a new fridge freezer which is being delivered tomorrow. I have a large fridge freezer and a freezer in the garage. Both freezers are packed full( OK I know- should have bought them weeks ago before I filled them with the garden produce) Have emptied them both and put all the must keeps in the garage freezer. Will wrap the rest in newspaper and put in the garage which is cold till the new one settles and can be switched on. Any ideas welcome. I am having kippers for lunch OH having herring and we are having steak and chips for tea. Will be eating very well for the next day or so( especially icecream as I found a few tubs of hagan daz lurking at the bottom of the big freezer.
Both my chums are off on holiday so can't fill their freezers which would have been my fallback option . HELP:confused:

Can't you keep both the old ones in the garage, just for a few days, or failing that switch on the new freezer and bung your stuff in asap. I don't read instruction manuals and I'm sure we used ours straight away. I wouldn't let any of your food go to waste.

  • sorry kind of confused here? you still have food to go in the freezer but no room? if so i would start cooking it, putting back in plastic boxes and freezing it once the new freezer is ready for it. this way you wont have a glut of raw food just more ready made meals for the new freezer.

No, I am trying to find some tips on keeping the food frozen till the new freezer can be switched on. I was told it is about 2 to 3 hours it has to stand before it can be switched on.

Hiya, have you got a cool box?

keep all frozen food together in a laundry basket or box to help it stay cold.

Why not keep both freezers on until the new one is ready to use?
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

I had this problem last year! Are the people who are delivering your new freezer taking away the old one at the same time? That's what they did with ours, which is why we had this tricky situation too!

I live in a block of flats so I went round some of the other flats with a big bag of frozen food and asked various people if they'd mind if we used a bit of space in their freezer overnight. I got some strange looks but most people were quite helpful! Do you have lots of neighbours you could try this with?!

    Hi,

we had a new freezer delivered a few weeks ago and were told by the delivery men that we could put frozen food into it straight away and providing the door was kept shut and the freezer turned on at the appropriate time after settling that the food would remain frozen.*

*We didn't try it out as this was an additional freezer (for our garden produce ;0) that I had promised myself several years ago!!
