evening ladies and gents, I have made a bit of a boo boo.. the other day i got given a £10 m&S voucher, so I went along and was pleased to get 2 slow roast lamb joints and a chicken for my £10..
trouble is ive mucked up and used the wrong lamb first and i've just gone to cook the second lamb joint and realised it was use by yesterday!!
so i opened it up and it smells a bit smeaky.. not like its off but you know that.. um ... mingey smell meat gets, so i rinsed it and bunged it in the slow cooker. its just starting to heat up, so i took the lid off to poke it down a bit and the smeaky smell is quite strong.. do you think the smell will go away as it cooks, will it be fine to eat, or am i wasting my time and electricity trying to save it and would i be better off cutting my losses and throw it?
what would you do?

it'll be fine, it doesn't go off at the stroke of midnight :rotfl:
the smell is probably the smell of lamb, as it's from M&S it's probably aged a little more than other cheaper supermarkets.
enjoy it.0 -
I'd be amazed if it was off, unless you haven't stored it correctly. As hot.chick says it won't go off at the stroke of midnight. I reckon on anything from M&S lasting an absolute minimum of a couple of days past the date. I've noticed they are ultra cautious, and usually have quite short dates. Be guided by your nose and taste when it's cooked. I'd not do lamb in the slow cooker but can well imagine it will smell different from oven roasted lamb. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0

Sometimes it's the lamb fat that has a bit of a smell.
You could try and remove some of it, even if you've started cooking it, it will probably be a bit easier to remove, then just continue slow-cooking.0 -
Joint of lamb I did in the slow cooker a week or so ago smelt horrible, buttasted fine when completly cooked and drained of fat.Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.0

Yeah, I agree my lamb always smells dodgy when it's cooking in the slow cooker. Tastes great though

thanks all, I was also pretty sure it wouldnt go off at the stroke of midnight.. im doing it in the slow cooker as its supposed to cook for hours in oven and cant justify leaving it on overnight... it will be fine hopefully!.. i did it the other day and then gave it a blast in the oven to brown it up a bit, make it a bit less spooky and it was lush...0

I've just put half a shoulder in the slow cooker for the first time and hope it turns out ok.
I love the smell of lamb roasting but it sounds as though the smell of it in a slow cooker is not nice.NSK Zombie # SFD 7/15 Food Bank £0/£5
