in Cutting tax
Good afternoon,
4 years ago I was mistakenly overpaid by an employer.
The money was subsequently repaid but the payment included tax.
I am trying to reclaim this money from the taxman (who is being pretty good about it and agree they owe me money).
The issue is they require a letter from my previous employer confirming the amount overpaid and the time frame.
I have written to my previous employer and their solicitors asking for such a letter and have only had a letter back from the solicitor saying they had queried this with the employer and were waiting for a response.
I wrote the letter back in August and received the solicitors response a month ago but have not heard anything since.
I am not sure how to proceed - I think employer has just put it low down in the to do list but the sum or of money is significant (several thousand pounds) and I could do with it back.
Any suggestions. I have payslip statements, receipts, and solicitors letters that back up what I am owed and from when but tax office is adamant they need confirmation from employer.
Many thanks in advance.

Back in the day, HMRC would have written direct to the employer for confirmation of all this, but I don't know if they do that sort of customer service nowadays. You could try asking. Otherwise, you can only keep badgering your ex employer.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0
