There used to be a daily prize for a crossword as well. And CTs were daily and started off at 20p (cash, not points). At that stage there were five or six quizzes a day, too.
Once they had attracted a few (hundred) thousand punters, the cash given away was reduced, then the rewards were made more expensive. And then along came the recession, a decrease in advertising budgets, and a corresponding reduction in opportunities to earn.
Things have improved slightly recently, with a few more CTs, and with the increase in their value from 5pp to 10pp.Much of the social history of the Western world over the past three decades has involved replacing what worked with what sounded good. - Thomas Sowell, "Is Reality Optional?", 19930 -

There were a lot more competitions too at the start and everything from mothers day to christmas had a special feature page of quizzes and competitions. I think one of the best was the Halloween story. (Basically, the first scene was set by PB and each day members could submit a short passage to continue the story - it was brilliant.)
Also, Darragh, a PB member of staff joined this thread and as well as giving info & helping members with any problems, he ran mini competitions from the thread and awarded points himself. They were great days .....0 -
