Re-hemming trousers

I have to re-hem some trousers as I need to let the hem down. So I have picked out the old hem. And I am thinking about cheating and using wonderweb type stuff to do the re-hemming. Yes being lazy I know.

But one question how to I get rid of the old hem mark. Do I just wash them and keep making the area damp and ironing them or is there another way.
