Hello all
I have 4 children (18 months, 6 yrs, 9yrs and 12 yrs) and wondered if anyone had any ideas for cheap halloween costumes for them as they have outgrown last years!
I have had a look round and dont really want to spend £10 - £15 each on costumes that they will only wear once and hiring them is about the same cost.
Any ideas or tips....

Could the 6yr old not wear the 9yr olds? and the 9yr old wear the 12 yr olds? then you just need to get 2 new ones??
Check out matalan between now and then as they normally do a 3 for 2 or something similar and I remember their prices being pretty reasonable!
Home bargains has some in if you have one near you

Home Bargains have some really good ones in for about £4 I think, there's a spider, a waitch, maybe a cat? Not sure as I didn't look at the children's ones very closely, might be worth popping down if you have one near you. If not, then what I usually do is wear clothes I already own (I have a lot of black though which is handy!) and then just accessorise, or make stuff myself. So if I had a black dress I could put on a witches hat, backcomb my hair, put creepy makeup on, carry a broom and I'd be set
You can do this with allsorts of costumes, plus with it being kids I bet they'd have loads of fun making parts of it themselves. What kind of things do they want to be?

I made a cheap 'Mummy' costume for my DD one year.... I went to our local discount store and bought 2 or 3 rolls of their cheapest crepe bandages. I then wrapped them around an old pair of white trousers & a white top - using tacking stitches to hold it all in place. I left some strands of the bandage hanging off loose too which looked quite good.
This year for halloween my DD (age 10) is going to be a funky witch! She will be using clothes she already has in her wardrobe - a black/silver stripey top, a floaty black skirt. I am then going to get her some stripey knee length socks and a witches hat. I will paint a cobweb on her face and do some funky witchy type eye make up.
For her school disco she is going for a Michael Jackson thriller type outfit (totally her idea - and I did point out that MJ wore a red leather suit in the thriller video!!!!!). I am going to sew a red stripe down the side of some plain black trousers. Then she is going to wear a white shirt, her brothers black tie and a black jacket she has. I hope to find her some white gloves and a white face mask like this one.
A black cat is normally quite a cheap option too. A pair of black leggings/trousers and black top - then you can buy a black tail and ears for a couple quid. Paint on a cat face to finish off the look.
You could also do the same with a devil girl - red leggings/skirt & top. Add devil horns and tail.:T*Thanks to all who posts comps * :j0 -

Thank you all. I have got my 18 month old and 6 yr old sorted.
My 9 yr old quite likes the idea of being a cat so i will dress her all in black with clothes in her wardrobe and i am hoping the pound shop or 99p store will do cat ear and tail. Otherwise will do the devil girl as Kisto above suggested.

Ok here is my DD dressed up for her school halloween disco tonight. This costume only cost £2.99 (for the hat) as I had all the rest!
Ahem...excuse the state of my back garden!!
oh and p.s. my dd is a dancer so it's not possible for her to stand 'normally' - hence the poses!!!! :rotfl:

How to make:
- Black Jacket (although I think it would still look fine without the jacket)
- Black Trousers
- Black Fedora Hat
- Black Tie
- White socks
- Plain black shoes
- Old white shirt. Rip the shirt so it looks like finger/claw marks. I found using opened out scissors to score it created a good effect. Score it in lines of four (as if four fingers have clawed at it). You don't want it to completely tear with each score, only on some. Also that way you get a bit of fraying too which adds to the effect. I tried to avoid getting 'clean' cuts. I then used red food colouring to 'bloodify' the rips. I applied it with a stiff paint brush, dragging it along and slightly beyond the score marks. The food colouring looks like real blood, very effective!
n.b. don't answer the front door with the food colouring all over your hands, as it will look like you've just carried out a kitchen massacre!!
:rotfl:
- Face Paint. (I'm fortunate that my friend is a face painter so she came round and did the zombie face, but I could have done it myself I think). You'll need white for the base, then black, blue and red to add the finishing touches.
- Hair - Lots and lots of back combing. I also sprinkled on loads of talc too! I did try some grey/silver spray but it didn't really show up.:T*Thanks to all who posts comps * :j0 -
Great costume Kisto. My 3yr old grandson loves the Gruffalo book and wanted to dress as the Gruffalo so I spent yesterday making his out using a simplicity pattern as a my starting point. It looks like a brown sleep suit with purple prickles, felt cones about 2" big, all over his back. I also made the hood with the pattern but omitted the beak! I did tusks ears, black tongue and orange eyes " with a poisonous wart" at the end of his nose! He has worn it all day even for nursery school. The staff loved it so now I have an order for one for school. It was great fun as we picked him up and walking back to the car children and adults passing in cars were smiling at our cutie. By the way he has chosen to be a nice Gruffalo.
