Bank loan default notice

I have a bank loan that I can't afford the full payments on and i've been trying to get them to accept my offer of payment (which they won't do as they somehow think I can get blood from a stone!).

The outstanding (settlement) amount was around £23,000 when I last spoke to them. They've now sent me a default notice but the amount they've put is £31,000. They've added all of the interest - is this how it works?

Thanks in advance xx
