CVs in .doc/.pdf formats

When uploading CVs to the agency's website or applying for a job, they either specify a .doc or .pdf format, depending on what they want. When they don't specify what fomat they want the CV in, which one is better? I'm just worried that if I choose one and not the other when they don't specify what format, my CV would get…

.pdf is a far more universal file extension and will mean that your CV can be read my more people. It also can't be edited, is easy to produce (you can save a document as a .pdf in most microsoft applications).

Most large companies have desktop faxes etc nowadays and they mostly create .pdf documents so it should be able to be read.

Docx is a pain as you need to get new software to read it rather than download a tiny pdf reader of the internet somewhere.
