Hello,
I'm new to this board and although I've just been reading through some of the threads, I'm still quite confused.
Basically, my youngest child has just gone off to school so I'm looking for work between the hours of 930am to 230pm everyday and homework would be ideal. Where would be the best places to start? I've been out of work for the last few years and I wouldn't feel confident enough to do partys but I'm very confident with all admin related tasks.
What would you recommend?

Today, I've spent a long time reading the posts regarding Arise, Maygenta, AA etc. I know I can't do the AA due to the location but I'm wondering about the other two. I'm confused as to whether they're a good thing or not as some posts say yes and some say no. They sound ideal to me but how do you get paid?0

Have you looked in to the party plan option? I know you say that you wouldn't feel confident enough to do parties however there are other ways of selling and if you choose a product that you are enthusiastic about yourself it makes it all the more enjoyable! I don't know a lot about all the different ones out there (and there are a lot!) but I do know about Usborne Books at Home if you want any more info on that. The great thing about it (and I'm sure lots of other party plan companies) is that you can work as much or little as you want and fit it in around school and the children.
Hope that helps. Sorry I can't help with the other companies you mentioned in your second post but I'm sure others will help you out! This website is full of really helpful advice so I hope you find something suitable.0 -
How about commission only based work? Mariposa-angels i know do this, they have a website with some information on.0

I'm quite interested in Usborne books but really wouldn't want to do parties. The thought of sitting in front of a group of people trying to sell things fills me with dread!! I've done Avon before but gave it up as I just didn't make any profit from it. I don't live near any family so relied purely on sales from strangers and it was a lot of hard work for very little, if any, return. Would Usborne books work in the same way?0 -

Thanks for this. I don't know what kind of work they offer but I will look into it.0 -

There are many other ways to sell the books other than parties, for instance you can sell to schools, and you might even find that you could start off by enquiring at the school your children attend. I totally understand your concerns about standing up in front of people and trying to sell - I get very anxious about this too, however when I have done parties (and I don't tend to do that many) I normally find that people get on with it themselves once they have a catalogue and a few samples to look at!0 -

I think you're very brave to have done any parties at all!! Our local school already gives out catalogues to parents from a different company and they get so many free books dependant on how many the parents buy. Because of that, I think it's maybe unlikely that they would be interested. I wonder, how much interest do you get door to door or do you make money mainly from targeting groups of people? Can you make a decent wage from this or is it just a supplement to other income?0 -

Sometimes schools take time to build a good relationship with and this is part of the process of building up a customer base but the potential is definitely there. Like all businesses, you can't expect to start earning lots over night however with the joining fee only £25 in October for a starter kit worth £100 (and your only commitment is to place an order for at least £100 worth of books within your first 12 weeks) there is not a big outlay to give it a try. HOWEVER, I fully appreciate that this might not be for you - it's a case of finding a product to suit you and there are all sorts of options out there.0 -

Sorry, I realise now that I didn't answer this in my last post! I haven't actually tried door to door so can't advise you on that but may be someone else has experience of trying this. I tend to visit groups or have stalls at events.
In relation to your other question about earnings, you earn 24% commission on your sales from day one.0 -

Thank you very much for all your help and advice. 24% commission does sound good. I'll have to look into it all further.:T0
