Thoughts on Blogging and the Economy

Last month I was invited to give a speech at Google on the economy. It was an honor. The speech appeared on Youtube a few days ago and Calculated Risk posted it. The speech is about 9 minutes long with a question and answer on the economy for roughly another 50 minutes.

Many now know that Calculated Risk created the first template for this blog in early 2005 and for that I will forever be grateful.

gives a questions and answer session..

It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

    Great stuff.

On a par with the schiffmeister.

It's a pity we haven't got someone similar over here.

He must have dreamt about this all his life.

Dad, when I grow up I'm gonna write sensationalist cr*p on a Blog on the Internet, and one day I'm gonna be famous :T

You don't get voted 3rd best blog, by writing sensible, balanced and well thought out pieces.

I told them to give you a shout as I was busy getting slow cooker tips in the Old Style Board, so I couldn't do it.

What he's saying is exactly what I say to people. And it's what I do. (up to 06:30)

I don't want to be discovered as a writer though, I just want to build an income that's not reliant on me actually doing anything ... a residual income. And in a hap-hazard, unfocussed way, I've picked and pecked my way round more than 1000 ways to do it.

But I enjoy it. I love the challenge, the traffic, the tools I discover, the tweaks that make something better ... but most of all, I love sharing my knowledge with people so they can do the same.

He's also right about the costs... I think I spend over £1000/year just keeping my plates balanced.

No, but it does give you an income so you can stop worrying about where the next £1/$1 is coming from, so you can then do other stuff ... like learning more.... and stuff you enjoy.
