Advice please. Was paying csa for my son and daughter till jul 2004 when son moved up to scotland with me having turned 16. my daughter 19 had left her mums previously and moved in with her gran. once son came up i claimed and was successfully awarded child benefit. notified csa belfast and they told me they would close case once i sent them proof which i did. heard nothing till sep 06 when got arrears lt demanding 5k plus. chased them up and they apologised advising case should have been closed 2004, they sent me letter sep 06 advising case closed and backdated to 2004. the 5k apparently 26 monthly instals up to that pt. every oct i get a annual schedule through and every year i call belfast and they say case closed but computer is racking up arrears. till now up to 12k. they advise the case is flagged up all over advising they cant stop the computer and that its charging in error. told me to ignore the schedules. i just worry every time that these letters come through. has anyone else experienced the same thing - case closed shows phantom arrears and keeps sending out annual schedules. anyone else in the same boat. thanks. rob . ps call today to belfast, case worker checked and told me that in 2004, no arrears were due to that point and anything accrued has been since i have had my son with me.

1st things 1st, you deal in writing, this person said and that person said does not wash, what you have in writing is a demand for money!
£5K, £12K is a lot of money , NACSA costs £40 and can look into your case for you, I know which money I would rather outlay :cool:0 -
Lets not beat around the bush.
If you are incable of sorthing something out at the CSA yourself I would try the following:
1) Contact your MP (if you are in Scotland DO NOT CONTACT your MSP as he cant help), im sure he has a email address, telephone number and surgeries you could visit.
2) Or contact Citizens Advice who can advocate on your behalf.When dealing with the CSA its important to note that it is commonly accepted as unfit for purpose, and by default this also means the staff are unfit for purpose.0 -

Every six months I request all the paperwork and telephone recordings they have in regards to me. That means that anything they have said is in my hands on a cd for use if this go to court, complaints etc;When dealing with the CSA its important to note that it is commonly accepted as unfit for purpose, and by default this also means the staff are unfit for purpose.0 -

Crikey, I can't imagine how much paperwork you must have.
As regular contributors to this board will know, I have only ever dealt with the csa by way of written correspondence and, I have only requested my files from them twice.
If you are indeed requesting your personal files every six months they must really love you. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0 -
Hi thanks for taking the time to answer. I suppose ive been naive in that the schedules im getting annually are for £240 per month (this includes 40 arrears apparently) and due to the fact ive got a letter from them in sep 06 confirming that my liability for child maintenance stopped in July 2004. I appreciate what your saying about verbal comments. Just find it strange ive got a case closed confirmation letter and in oct 2007 and oct 2008 and most recently oct 2008 got annual letter saying your payments for the next 12 mths are as follows £240 per month. If i write to them and send it recorded delivery, are they able to confirm in writing that case is closed and importantly that the arrears showing (but not being chased in any form) are due to a computer error. Thanks0

No they dont love me, I actually think they hate me. I have had 10 written apologies from them this year alone for where they have given me wrong information etc; I am actually now banned from phoning the CSA because of the upset I cause their employees.
Now you would think thats because ive been abusive etc; wrong, its because they cant handle the fact they cant palm me off with nonsense etc;
I only wish I had been abusive, it would have been fun!When dealing with the CSA its important to note that it is commonly accepted as unfit for purpose, and by default this also means the staff are unfit for purpose.0 -
Getting schedules each year, could mean you get stung at a later date. I'd get in writing why are you being sent them and get them stopped. The triggering on the system is probably an excuse given by a bod/junior in the CSA offices. Go higher and find out for sure.0

If the computer is charging in error then it needs to be flagged up with the correct department, logged and fixed. I've never seen it do this myself, but a fix of a computer glitch on the old system usually takes about 8 weeks.
Get back onto them and ask for a supervisor. I'd ask for an immediate call back actually, this could be a long one.0
