I remember being adviced to keep your freezer full, if not with food but with empty boxes to fill the spaces but the latest ad on tv tells you not to keep it too full !!!

I realise that too full and not enough are not exactly quantifiable, so it does come down to a certain degree of user judgement.
If your freezer drawers are so full you cannot close the freezer drawer - then you have too much stuff in there, conversely if there are plenty of air gaps, half empty drawers etc then empty boxes will lower the volume of air that needs to be cooled after opening the freezer door.

I saw the ad too and wondered if they had got confused? But then I think I heard that the "new" self-defrosting freezers need air circulation to run efficiently, so maybe they have something?0
