Ruined cake :(

Hi all. I made this cake which is a Nigella recipe.

It's completely sunk in the middle and cracked so badly on the top that any icing would just fall through the cracks to the centre of the cake. It's just no good.

Does anybody know why??

could be various things due to oven temp, beating, etc but from what i have heard of nigellas recipes they dont always come out with good results?

did you open the oven door?

The recipe said to check on it at 45 minutes, which I did.

I think they're a bit hit and miss too;)

I'm not sure why it didn't work but are you sure it is beyond hope? Could you use it to make a luscious trifle, maybe a banana one as they go well with honey and chocolate. Or perhaps serve it warm in pudding bowls with cream or vanilla ice cream? I'd eat it:)

Have you baked other cakes successfully? I only ask as I found that all my baking was cruddy in the oven in the house we've moved in to. None of my usual recipes worked well.

I've now learnt to make sure that the oven is on for a good half an hour or so before I want to use it as it just doesn't seem to work well initially.

I wonder if the ratios are wrong in that recipe - I'm not good at metric but 2 eggs to that amount of sugar and flour looks low - I've just used 4 eggs to 8 and a bit ounces of flour and sugar.

could you pile up fruit in the middle and drizzle with a little chocolate to make it look as though it's supposed to be like that?

or cut out the centre completely and pretend you baked it in a ring tin :D

Well, the good news is my human dustbin partner is eating it despite the look and sogginess of it. So at least it's not a total waste!

I'm glad some of you find Nigella hit and miss. I just can't work out where it went so wrong. I did everything she asked!
