loans for home inprovements

Please bare with me and my ineptitude but I have paid off my mortgage a few years ago and now need a loan for home improvements. I presumably can now not remortgage (get a moortgage) to obtain the funds. I presumably must get a loan - if so is secured or unsecured best as the rates do not seem to differ much.
