Woolworths to return as Alworths

Options
"Woolworths is back. Well, sort of. The nation's beloved chain is returning in all but name in the form of Alworths.

These stores will have the same iconic styling and sell everything from picture frames to, of course, the moreish pick 'n' mix confectionary that helped make Woolworths such a favourite.

The plan is to launch 50 stores, but for now, we'll have to make-do with just three, set to be in Didcot in Oxfordshire, Faversham in Kent and Wokingham in Berkshire.

The grand opening will be on November 5...though it's not known which one of the sites will have the honour of kick-starting the new era."

How is this the store formerly known as Woolworths returning?

Seems to be just the "former head of stores and concessions at Woolworths" setting up his own outfit, and claiming some succession rights to Woolworths.

Andy Latham - Alworths - how was that name chosen in a competition - must have been from an entry of one :rotfl:

However Page will not be involved in the new launch and is threatening legal action against Latham, who reportedly used family connections to secure funding from the Middle-East to launch the store on his own.
  • Wilkos knocked them out of town in the begining in my opinion.

Now the poundshops have started to take over I can Wilkos being the next one to go.

So this guy is going to take over a failed store then try and make it work again......don't they learn first time round.

I love love love quotes like this from papers.

Was woolworth's a favourite? With who? Surely the fact that they went out of business is a clue as to how popular they really were.

Even the picka nd mix was a bit average-- and its a remarkably unhygenic way to serve food, too. Ok, they have spoons, but how many thousands of hands must have just "dipped in." sweetie shops often do a better system where you tell them what to get you pick and mixed rather than the "DIY" menthod.

Nostalgia is wonderful, but business is business.

    Hi All,

Interesting they picked a launch date of 5th November, as 05/11/2009 would have been the 100th anniversary of Woolworths in the UK!

    Cheers
