I hope someone here can work out what is going on and help me out...

I have received my payslip and my pay was slightly lower than it should be, so I started looking though. I have also been sent another payslip for previous month, with the higher amount on it than I have actually received. There is £14 pension payback included in the payslip, but they applied different tax code. Can someone knowledgeable look through and tell me what is going on? I listed numbers below for August and September payslips...

So, the original August payslip looked like this:
Total pay £2782.83 (includes bonus)
PAYE £448.60
NI £253.66
Pension £155.17
Sharesave £50.00
Tax code 647L
Net Pay £1875.40

New August payslip looks like this (but I have not received the difference):
Total pay £2782.83
PAYE £448.60
NI £253.66
Pension £141.17
Sharesave £50.00
Tax code 647L
Net Pay £1889.40

September payslip:
Total pay £2532.83
Pension payback £14.00
PAYE £423.60
NI £226.38
Pension £141.17
Sharesave £50.00
Tax code 622L
Net Pay £1705.68

The tax on your Sept payslip is about £21 higher due to the change of code to 622L and it being being backdated to the start of the tax year. You should have had a notice of coding explaining why this has changed, if you have not had this you need to contact the tax office to find the reason.
The £14 extra in the amended Aug payslip has been added to your Sept pay. I think that you may have copied one of the figures for Sept wrongly as the payslip does not quite balance, it is 28p adrift.

did you recently start to receive any benefits from your employer such as free medical insurance or a low interest/interest free loan?

Chrisbur is spot on. You should have had a notice of coding sent to you from HMRC with the new code on it and an explanation of the deductions from the code.

chrisbur, the tax code on September payslip indicates lower personal allowance - reduction from £6745 to £6225. Why was this changed? I can't remember hearing any announcements... My husbands payslip has the same tax code for September as for August and the rest of this tax year. I remember last year the tax code changed mid-year to give extra allowance due to 10% tax bracket removed.

I do not receive any benefits, we get medical insurance through my husbands company and I do not have any loans.

There weren't any announcements as no global change has been made. The change is in your own personal circumstances and as chrisbur and trevormax said you should have got a coding notice from HMRC explaining the change.

If you do not have this coding notice you need to phone HMRC and find out why the change has been made - we can only guess.

Thanks everyone. I just called HMRC, and they said this is because I receive medical benefit. Which I don't!!!!!! So, I have just sent an email to work to have this sorted. The thing is, a few months back we were sent P11Ds and mine stated that I have BUPA cover. I don't take mine through my company, as husband's company covers us both. A few other people had it sent out like this as well. We were told that it was a mistake and we don't need to do anything about it. It seems, they just didn't bother to sort it out...
