This is more of a warning than a question
Over the last couple of days, I thought I would do that chore I've been putting off since April: Complete the self assessment tax return I get because I have modest self employed earnings.
So I got out the bundle of papers I collected last year and sorted it into piles.
I've sorted out a few quid of Santander dividends with help from other members on this forum.
I've even managed to reconcile my modest dividend payments, even though companies are trying to save money by including the dividend notification somewhere in with the AGM bumph.
I have managed to understand how my pension payment is accounted for by HMRC.
However I seem to be missing a couple of bank/building society interest notifications:
It turns out that Britannia (now merged with CO-OP) had decided that a small amount I had left in a postal account was "dormant" and simply stopped bothering to write to me.
Alliance and Leicester, as I discovered on the back of the 07/08 notification, no longer bothers to send out "Statement for the purposes of section 975 of of the income tax act 2007" unless you go on line and ask for one. I could not even go on line and find the interest payment as the on-line records only appear to go back to the start of 2009.
The computer reckons it will send me the required certificate "within 10 days".
So those of you who, like me, are getting over confident about using on line accounts BEWARE you could miss the deadline.
I cannot see HMRC being very sympathetic if they do an investigation if your records consist of some smudgy screen shot off the net?
Harry
PS There might be a postal strike on the cards too!

Just a reminder - If you file online then you have until 31st January to complete your Return. If you are not set up to file online, it does take about a week to receive the necessary log in details from the Revenue - so don't leave it till 30th January to start the process.0
