Turned down for the first time interesting update

Well I am feeling slightly bemused. After all this discussion, youll never guess what came in the post today. A letter each for OH and myself containing the pin numbers for our new American Express Platinum Card account. Had to run to the shredding box to find last week's letter to make sure I hadnt made a mistake, but no, it definitely says we've been unsuccessful in our application. Am now really torn between phoning them and asking what the f..... is going on or leaving it and just taking the cards no questions asked so as not to tempt fate. A 2% cashcard would come in very handy right now as my OH uses one for petrol and its paid off every month but he doesnt get anything back for it. I am also a believer now that debt is all a matter of scales and tipping the balance towards credit or debit so every little thing that you do tips the scales a little more. This would definitely tip the scale a little more in the credit direction. Its odd, though. I cant understand it.

Seems v.wierd to me?? most things like this are automated so i would assume that if you were declined in the first instance then it would not progress any further?? really fo ryou to decide what to do - maybe if you have the pin no's wait until the card arrives then telephone them??

Yes I might just telephone them to activate the card. Ive decided if they havent noticed what's happened then Im not going to tell them.

You could ring & ask them to confirm amount & rate?

You might find they turned you down for the card you asked for, but have sent you one with a higher rate hoping you will use it without question. Capital one does this and charge up to 26% interest.

I will check the rate then when we get the cards. However the letter we got seemed to be turning us down for American Express generally. The pins we have received are for the American Express Platinum so I am going to check its the same one.

Yes, i just checked Martin's article about cashback cards and its definitely the one we applied for.

New something like this was going to happen cos I saw two magpies on the lawn yesterday.

Came home from work early as not feeling well and found the AE cards with the post. Activated them without any problem. Am going to use them as planned for daily shopping that I have to do anyway and I am going to put away what I spend into a savings account till the end of each month and then I'm going to pay them off. Im not sure now if the letter is a mistake or the cards being sent but Im not saying anything. Might be tempting fate.
